advise for amateur runner
« on: March 06, 2011, 08:43:38 AM »
hello

i'm doing the great north run this year but i need advise on how to put a plan together. i started running and found out i'm really unfit, i ran one night but struggled badly, the second time i ran a bit more, how do i find a way to run longer than 5 mins before getting out of breathe. what do i need to do to help myself. i'm only little so it's not because i'm over weight, and i don't mean that in a nasty way.

Hi Amanda,
I would start with a walk run routine and slowly build up to more running. For example walk for 5 minutes and than run for two minutes than go back to a walk. Do this for 20 minutes every other day. Gradually add more running. Remember it takes between 21 to 28 days before your body adapts to a stress. Keep me posted.

Great advice, you will be slowed down much more by an injury than by taking a slow steady build up.

Leggings have roared back into fashion, becoming a staple for the fall and winter. They're not just for the slim and slender; you can wear leggings if you wear a plus size. Choosing the leggings well and accessorizing them smartly will keep you looking hip without looking hippy.
